Beams can
be oppressive when positioned over a bed, stove or desk and suppress the
chi of the people living beneath them.' (Hale, 1999, p.54).
However it depends on the proportion of the room as to how oppressive
they are.
- Rooms
with high ceilings are often acceptable as they don't seem to come down
on the occupants of the room.
- Normally proportioned rooms tend to have disturbed chi if they contain
over hanging beams.
- Disruption can be helped by simply moving furniture out from directly
underneath the beams.
- Beams could also be painted the same colour as the ceiling so they
do not stand out as much.
- Uplighters underneath a beam will give an 'illusion of lifting the
beams'.

Beams that are the same colour as the ceiling don't disrupt too
much.

Outside
beams do not intrude as much as inside beams, however these would
benefit by a lighter colour.
